Cloth diapering can be a pains in the ass. lets just put that out there. My husband and I decided to cloth diaper our son from day one. Everything went great for the first 6 months, then things began to change as our son aged. Things started to smell, our washing routine seemed to not work anymore, and we started to experience leaks. we gave up cloth and moved to disposables…..ugh. I was determined to find out how to solve the problem as I hated using disposables. We ended up using disposables for 5 MONTHS!! I was over it, so I began researching the things I would need to cloth diaper a toddler. I also needed to find a different wash routine. The first few months after trying again were trial and error. I used expensive detergents meant for cloth diapering, but we were still experiencing smell issues. IT WAS TIME TO STRIP!!! The diapers I mean lol. After stripping the diapers I decided to take matters into my own hands, and make my own wash routine. Here is what works for me.
Spray the poop!- one of the most important things you MUST do when cloth diapering a toddler is to dispose of the poop before you put the diaper into the wet bag. one of the best ways to do that is to invest in a Diaper Sprayer. I bought this one for 20 dollars and it works great. Spraying the diaper gets rid of the solid waste. My son was breast fed so I didn’t have to worry about this for the first 6 months that we cloth diapered.,But this time the poop had to go into the toilet. After you spray the diaper put it in a wetbag. Make sure you invest in a wetbag its a very important part of cloth diapering.
Don’t wait too long. DONT WAIT TOO LONG BEFORE YOU WASH!!! I wash every two days. For example if I wash on Wednesday I’ll wash again Saturday. No later. Waiting too many days will make smells stay in the diaper even after you wash them. I learned that the hard way.
Those are two very important steps to my wash routine. That is why I singled them out. on wash day here is what I do.
- Set the washer load to one size above the size you have.HOT wash.Cold double rinse.
- Add the detergent first before the diapers (I use tide original powder.Trust me. It works!)
- Seperate/ remove all covers from inserts. I do this after spraying them, but if you haven’t you would do this now.
- Add the diapers, and the wet bag to the washer.
- Let wash…
- Once washed add all the liners/prefolds to the dryer and hang the covers, and wetbag up to dry.. I use a Foldable Drying Rack
Annnnd… You’re done. easy right? This has been the routine that works the best for us. I feel like the tide detergent gets the diapers cleaner than the other detergents iv used. Also it makes them smell good. The extra rinse helps remove extra detergent that may have not been removed during the first rinse. If you have any additional questions feel free to leave a comment in the comment section below.
